History of the Department

 

The Postgraduate Department of Studies in Education was established in 1967. M.Ed. programme has been offered since its inception. Courses such as M.Phil. & PhD has been added to the Department. Over the years, there has been considerable diversification in these courses in terms of their content and structure to keep them in tune with quality and relevance. The Department has made a substantial contribution in almost the last SIX decades of its existence. A good number of competent, trained teachers have passed through the ages of the Department and are employed as Educational Planners, Educational Administrators, Curriculum Developers and Educational Researchers in the State of Karnataka and also in National level Institutions such as NCERT, NEUPA, NCTE, IIM as well as several Universities. The Department has striven hard to maintain quality and excellence in programs, despite a substantial increase in the number of candidates admitted to its different programs. The Department has produced several Ph.Ds.' M.Phil.’s and M.Eds.’ The faculty has developed several research tools and has several publications.

Courses Offered

The Department offers M.Ed., and Ph.D. programs. Specializations like Educational Administration, Teacher Education, Life skill Education, Educational Technology, Curriculum Development, early Childhood Care & Education, Inclusive Education, Contemporary Studies , Reflective Teaching and Innovative Practices, Environmental Education along with open elective ‘pedagogy of Teaching  are offered at the M.Ed., level. Educational Technology & ICT is a core paper introduced at the M.Ed. level to help students obtain proficiency in ICT.

  1. Nature of Course- Semester Scheme
  2. Duration- The Master's Degree in Education is CBCS pattern, (Regular) shall be of two academic years having four Semesters.
  3. Intake50
  4. Eligibility: Candidates seeking admission to the M.Ed. programme should have obtained at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade in any one of the following teacher preparation programmes.

        i. B.Ed. with any undergraduate degree (with 50% marks in each).

        ii. B.A, B.Ed., B.Sc.B.Ed.

        iii. B.El.Ed.

        iv. D.El.Ed/D.Ed/TCH with an undergraduate degree (with 50% marks in each).

A candidate who has passed the B. Ed., examination of this University or any other University recognized as equivalent thereto shall be eligible for admission to the course, provided he/she has secured at least 50% of the marks in the aggregate.

In the case of SC/ST students his percentage of marks shall be at least 45%, however candidates who are deputed by the Government of Karnataka to the course are exempted from the above eligibility condition

Projects and Activities

 

International Conference: Organized a two-day international conference, publishing eight books as part of the event.

Lecture Series: Conducted an online lecture series with plans to continue both online and offline in the future.

Go Green Initiative: Launched a department-wide initiative encouraging the planting of trees to celebrate birthdays and special occasions.

Outreach Program: Organized awareness programs in rural areas, engaging students in community development activities.

Academic and Creative Work Portfolio: Students were encouraged to engage in creative academic activities (e.g., chart-making, story writing, poetry, display boards) for two years, culminating in the creation of a report and a book showcasing their work.
